Follow these 10 tips and then hit the streets with paper ammo! Keep the protest messaging going even between physical protest dates and rallies! You can spread truth in your community. Easy for anyone to do. Check it out!
You don’t have to prowl around at night and tape up signs like some introvert ninja on a mission. Anyone can take part! Do you have a library or grocery store bulletin board? Use them! Go to a VFW with a notice board? Use it! We know if you’re in school, your college has spots! Hit those! Telephone and street light poles near you? Get 'em! One of those dog poopbag dispensers? Sticker it! Do you have some little free libraries near you? Use those! While we normally wouldn’t condone using these for political purposes, we feel it is justified at this point. Leave some messages inside like flyers. Also, the messages don’t have to be political, just the truth. That leads us to the next in the list.
We don’t know your community, you do. With the examples in #1, choose appropriate messages. For the library, maybe pick something about saving public education. For the VFW something about cuts to the VA, of course. Little free library maybe a pro-science one or even just some type of equality message. College campus, go nuts! We got all kinds of topics! Going to a National Park? Hang something to support the workers. You know what would be the best in your area, not us. Plan accordingly. We also have a street team designation that can work to create custom posters that will resonate locally, if none are a right fit.
You don’t want to tie them to a message without consent. Don’t hit the local mom and pop shops, but do hit things nearby. You don’t want to turn the community against your message because of a bad decision. In reverse, the community may get behind it enough to participate themselves. It always comes down to the right message. Maybe that mom and pop shop was damaged by flooding before. They may put a poster up, about cuts to NOAA hurting Americans, in their window for you. It works because it’s not political. It’s just the truth about funding cuts and how they will make us less prepared for the future.
No speed limit, stop signs or other local safety signs. Seems like a given, but it’s important to remember. If a cop rolls up on you taping a poster over the front of a speed limit or stop sign, it’s not going to be good. Don’t obstruct signs. Backs of those signs though, fair game in our opinion! Now, something like a construction site, that people walk by with some big white space on its corporate sign? Your call. We would put a poster or sticker up. This takes us to our next rule.
Be able to quickly undue what you have done. Make your posters and flyers easily removable so if confronted you can pull them down and walk away. Or just leave it up, ignore everything and walk away. It should be easy enough to take down, that it would be silly for anyone to complain or make any big deal about it.
Damage? You don’t need that heat on you. Leave nothing behind but your message. This also goes back to not turning the community against your message. Also, if you cause no damage, what will they charge you with? Maybe petty things, like trespassing, if any, but most likely nothing, especially if you follow our postering etiquette.
Seems self explanatory. You want to walk up. Slap a poster against the surface and walk away. Don’t stand there pulling tape apart for 5 minutes if people are around. Get it ready out of sight if needed. Night time runs can make this easier. We go around with a roll of box tape and a plain plastic pocket folder full of flyers. A plastic folder can be worked on because the tape won’t stick hard to it.
If you don’t want people to know where the signs are coming from then don’t tell anyone. Full stop. People wanna “be in the know”. Then those same people get drunk and want to share with everyone how they are “in the know”. Just be aware of who you tell. If you want to go at night and keep it a secret, do that. If you have a cover, don't blow it.
Even though this is pretty risk free, watch for cameras. Wear a mask and unrecognizable clothes as needed. People shouldn’t be looking at video for any crime but they may be curious if they can find who put up all the flyers. Again, no one will be searching too hard if you follow the etiquette and didn’t crime.
Have fun with whatever your do! If you aren't ready for a poster yet, maybe try one of our sticker sheets. Stickers are fast, fun and easy! Be safe. Be smart. Spread your message!
